Project Overview

The 175 MW / 350 MWh Cross Town battery storage project will provide energy and capacity services to the New England grid, enhancing grid reliability and accelerating the integration of readily available renewable energy. Cross Town submitted an application for Site Plan Review approval from the Town of Gorham’s Planning Board. The Site Plan approval was awarded in April 2022. In 2023, Cross Town received final authorizations from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the following permits from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MDEP): SLODA, NRPA, Freshwater Wetland Alteration, and Water Quality Certification.

Construction of the Cross Town Energy Storage project began in Spring 2024.

The completion of the Cross Town project will ensure that the Independent System Operator of New England (ISONE) meets its reliability needs. Additionally, the project will support the state’s energy storage goals of 300 megawatts of installed capacity within the state by the end of 2025 and 400 megawatts by the close of 2030. Situated near an existing substation, on an industrially zoned parcel in the Gorham Industrial Park, the site is outside of flood plains and the development has been carefully designed to minimize impacts to wetlands. The Cross Town project site is an optimal location for new energy infrastructure.
